Naloxone Training & Overdose Prevention

In the last year, drug overdoses have claimed the lives of about 110,000. One person per every five minutes. Overdose deaths may be prevented with the help of the measures provided by St Laurent IDA Pharmacy. Our mission is to equip drug users and their loved ones with the knowledge they need to prevent overdoses and intervene in the event of an overdose.

Overdose on opioids may be briefly reversed with the use of a drug called naloxone. Naloxone is ineffective unless there are opioids present in the body.

There are three programs run by the Ontario Ministry of Health that give free naloxone kits across the province:

  • The Ontario Naloxone Program (ONP) provides naloxone kits to clients, their friends, and family via needle syringe/exchange programs, hepatitis C programs, and partnering community-based organisations.
  • Through the Ontario Pharmacies' Distribution of Naloxone Program (ONPP), participating pharmacies in Ontario provide access to naloxone kits.
  • Take Home Naloxone Program run by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Individuals in provincial correctional institutions who are at danger of an opioid overdose and who want a kit are instructed on how to administer naloxone and provided kits upon release.
